Arts and Crafts walnut bureau, 1929 designed by Betty Joel and Made at Token Works by W. G. Evans., with a fall front enclosing pigeon holes, three drawers and a secret compartment over four drawers. Drawers are all made with hand cut lap and through dovetails. Divides into upper and lower sections

About Betty Joel


Betty Joel (Token Works) (1894 to 1985)—A 1920s Art and Crafts furniture Maker founded by Betty Joel [Elizabeth Mary Stewart Lockart]. Joel inherited the ethos of the English Arts and Crafts Movement, but added the manufacturing standards and techniques from boatbuilding. By 1937 she was the most revered name in bespoke furniture in England with a high class showroom in Knightsbridge. Clients included well known show business and professional names and Royalty

English Walnut—English walnut is considered to be one of the most beautiful timbers because of its decorative grain, deep colouring, lustre and durability. It is highly prized for high class furniture, although its high cost and scarcity mean that solid walnut is only found in the very best

Excellent condition with good colour and smoothly sliding drawers. Some marks on the leather writing pad.
